Winter 2016-17 has seen a splurge of media coverage stressing the importance of solid sleep and, more importantly, the repercussions of us not sleeping well. The BBC in particular has been very active in its reporting, publishing articles on: “Sleep tips: Avoid afternoon coffee, over-50s advised” on 11th January 2017; “Sleep deprivation ‘costs UK £40bn a year’ on 30th November 2016; “Are you getting enough sleep?” on iWonder; and a string of news clips on Five Live.

Here, at Comfomatic, none of the news contained within these various programmes is new or surprising. We have known for years about the importance of sleep for our general well-being and mental health. Finally, on Tuesday this week (7th February) the Royal Society of Medicine held a conference in London to discuss, as they put it, “sleep debt.” It will be interesting to see if any of the outputs from the day are formally published. What is clear from this and other events, however, is that “sleep” as a subject is starting to receive the attention it deserves. The links between sleep deprivation and health is now clinically established, as the weight of evidence on the importance of sleep mounts.
