Are Acid Reflux, Heartburn Or A Hiatus Hernia Disturbing Your Sleep?

If reflux or heartburn is worse when you lie flat, raising your head and upper body can help reduce the chance of stomach acid travelling upwards. A Comfomatic adjustable bed makes that elevated sleeping position easy to find and adjust at the touch of a button.

Reflux, heartburn and sleep position

When reflux is worse lying flat, sleep position matters.

Acid reflux and heartburn are common symptoms of GORD and can also occur with a hiatus hernia. NHS guidance for hiatus hernia recommends raising the head end of the bed so the chest and head are above the waist, helping reduce the tendency for stomach acid to travel upwards. An adjustable bed gives you a simple, repeatable way to achieve that position.

1

Acid Reflux

When acid or bitter-tasting fluid travels upwards and symptoms are more noticeable when you lie flat.

2

Heartburn

When a burning sensation in the chest makes it harder to settle comfortably at night.

3

Hiatus Hernia

When reflux symptoms associated with a hiatus hernia are affecting your comfort and you want an easier way to sleep with your upper body raised.

4

Night-time Positioning

When you want a smooth, adjustable incline rather than relying on a stack of pillows that can move during the night.

A more practical way to sleep elevated

Raise your upper body without rebuilding a pile of pillows.

A traditional flat bed gives you very little control over incline. A Comfomatic adjustable bed allows you to raise your head and upper body smoothly and alter the angle whenever you need to. The bed does not treat GORD or repair a hiatus hernia; it simply makes recommended upper-body elevation much easier to achieve and maintain.

Elevation, comfort and relaxation.

Many Comfomatic beds can also be specified with optional heat and massage functions for added warmth, comfort and relaxation while resting. These are comfort features and are not treatments for reflux, GORD or hiatus hernia.

When to seek medical advice

If reflux or hiatus hernia symptoms are persistent, severe or getting worse, speak to a healthcare professional. Seek urgent advice if you develop difficulty swallowing, frequent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, blood in vomit or significant upper abdominal pain. A Comfomatic bed supports positioning and comfort; it does not replace medical treatment.
